How would you deal with knowing that you were responsible for your mother‘s death? What if you were only 4 years old when it all happened? That is exactly what 14 year-old Lily Owens has been dealing with for the past ten years. She remembers that one day there was a fight going on between her mother and father. Lily remembers her mother grabbing a gun, having it knocked out of her hands and Lily scrambling for the gun and it going off. Ever since that day she has lived with her abusive father and their black housekeeper Rosaleen. Several events occur that end up with Rosaleen and Lily leaving their home in search of a better life. Maybe a life where Lily will learn more about her mother.
