The beginning of playing with the enemy is very amazing so far. Being a baseball player, it is easy to imagine the story. When they talk about Gene throwing out a guy trying to steal second, without standing up, i think to myself, "Wow, that was amazing, what arm strength for a fifteen year old". I can also picture him hitting the ball. When Gene's older brother said that war was just around the corner and many were getting drafted, i knew it was coming. Gene was going to go to war, but that didn't stop him from joining the Dodgers and it is quite amazing so far how his life has evolved in just a few weeks after meeting the scout for the Brooklyn Dodgers

The beginning of the book Playing with the Enemy was very interesting. I don't play baseball but I do play sports and when reading this book i can tell he is a really good player because everyone everyone wanted to watch him play baseball after they had found out he could be signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Its also interesting to see how he deals with life as he finds out about the war.

The beginning of the book is pretty intersting. I'm a baseball player so it is easy to relate to some of the things Gene talks about dealing with baseball. His position in the book is catcher. He says at one point "I love catching." I used to be a catcher and it is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in a sport. For Gene to love it and be so good at it at such a young age is really impressive. I'm interested in finding out how Gene will handle having to put his baseball career on hold in order to go to war.

This story is really entertaining. I love baseball so I am really into this book. Whats even more amazing about this story is that it is true. This really happenend. A 15 year old boy signing with a major league baseball team is unheard of. He loves to play and many of the locals of Sesser can see that. Gene loves to play catcher because he says he is the only one with the view of the whole field. This is an amazing oppurtunity for a small town farming kid from Illinois. He has a chance to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers, but his father does not agree. Will his dream come to an end because of the upcoming war? I shall find out.

The ending of Playing With The Enemy was very surprising and nice ending in my opinion. I thought it was good that the father finally told the story that ranged from the stories of his past to his son about his past baseball carrer and why he hates it now to the way that him and his wife met. The akward silence when they are driving home after their talk is normal but I think they will get over it and live a truthful life with no secrets. This was an interesting book to view someones life through their best times and worst times and see how they overcame the obsticles in their way.

I really enjoyed this book. It was easy for me to understand Gene's way of thinking about baseball because I play it myself. I think that the book sends a strong message about values. While Gene was young baseball was his whole life and it was what he valued most. After the war and his injury he realized that his family is what he valued most. The book teaches us that sometimes what we think is supposed to happen doesn't always work out, but things happen for a reason. We should take a long look at the life we have and be thankful for the people that are in it.

This was an excellent book and I recommend this book to anyone. Most of the time, plans do not always go they way the way should. Gene's plan was to play baseball his whole life, but things didn't go the way he planned. He went to war instead, but for every bad obstacle that comes in the way some good oppotunity comes out of it. Gene learned the value of life after his experiences in the war. He realized that you should always follow your dream, but family also has a say in it. This whole story was a great father to son talk about John's past in baseball. No more secrets are kept between the two now.

Everybody is always commenting on how they love baseball and that they can relate to the book. By the end of the book, you realize that anyone can relate, not just baseball players. Gene goes through a lot of stuff that most people will never experience. His friends help him out of a tough time and he teaches us to keep going. It's pretty amazing how although his ankle felt like it was going to snap half the time, he still fought through the pain, for the team. He also teaches us that we can do anything as long as we put our heads to it. He started drinking a lot of alcohol and seemed like he was never going to stop, but he had a passion and said no more to drinking. I recommend this book to anyone who is up for a little self-confidence booster.
