In the novel "Coal Black Horse", Robey's mother, Hettie, sends him to search for his father in the war. I was awe struck. I wondered how she could send her only child into blood shed with little knowledge and experince of the outside world. In addition to that, he was only fourteen years old. I don't know if Hettie knew what kind of ricky situation she was putting her son into, but I definatly pictured it as an arbitrary decision. Now Hettie must wait until both, one or possibly none of her loved ones show up on her doorstep alive.

I will disagree with Nadia on this. If looked at that time period kids at Robey's age were in the army already. Durring that time period the life expectancy wasnt that high. And I understand why Robey's mother wouldnt worry because in that time period many people believed that the civil war would be a quick decisive battle.

Overall, this novel has satisfied me. It took me through a wild journey; a life at war. Robey's couragious personality came across many hardships such as, witnessing a young girl, Rachel, getting raped, soldiers getting shot, stabbed and hung just inches from his frightened, grubby body. Even though Robey's father died in his hands and could not bring him home, Robey stayed alive and lived through an experience that he will learn from and tell about forever.

Coal Black Horse has been a great readn for me. I believe the author showed a great transformation from Robey the kid to Robey the mature responsible adult. The vehicle for this transformation was the coal black horse which taught robbie how to be a man. His experiencs range from seeing a women being raped o killing people. By th end of the book robbie felt no guilt whn he killed someone. His fathers death was probably the most traumatic and yet the biggest step in his transformation. When a close one dies it bings a whole new experience to a person and also makes him mature. This book is such a great read that I think anyone who reads it should know that this book causes you to stay up in the middle of the night.
