I have gotten through most of the book and it is so far very interesting. It was such a rare coincidence that a couple of teenagers ditched school to play a live online game only to end up near the Bay Bridge as it was bombed by terrorists. As if it wasn’t bad enough to go through that horrific incident, the teens are held by the Department of Homeland Security as suspected terrorists! This book made the point of how overly speculative the government can be these days due to increased terrorist activity across the world. The teens are then kidnapped to a secret location by the DHS where they are ruthlessly interrogated. I am excited to read what comes next and to see the fate of these unfortunate teens.
Heena is right how it was a rare coincidence that when these teens went out to play a video game that the Bay Bridge was blown to pieces. This is book is kind of insane well not kind OF it is insane. How the main character Marcus and his friends were kidnapped by the Department of Homeland Security just because they were trying to get help for Darryl since some AN idiot stabbed him when they were trying to get to shelter. Little Brother is a book about solving puzzles and beating the cops at their own game. Its amazing how these teenagers were able to create this secret world where no one would be able to invade their privacy.
Little Brother is a very interesting and exciting action novel. The book starts off by introducing us to the main character, Marcus Yallow. Marcus is a senior high school student in San Francisco. He loves technology and he uses it at times to get himself out of trouble. One day Marcus and his three close friends ditch school, to find clues for a live video game called, Harajuku Fun Madness. During their search, the Bay Bridge is bombed by terrorists. The teens are shocked and scared of what they just went through. While trying to escape the Department of Homeland Security capture them, because they think the teens might be terrorists. They are then taken to a remote place and questioned for hours. The teens are all very afraid and do not know if they will ever return home. I am very excited and can not wait to see what ends up happening to all the teens, most of all, Marcus.
Rachel R. said I agree with Diane. This book is very interesting book. This book is about a guy name marcus who wants to ditch school for at least two periods. He goes with one of his friends and they find another student who goes to the school and them three go and find clues for the live game. Until it turns to a disaster. This book shows how three kids deal with a huge problem that people think are terrorist...I cant wait to i see what happens at the very end too.
Little Brother is the modernistic cousin of Orwell's 1984. It is aimed at a younger audience and likewise it is less realistic. In it, after a brutal interrogation and detainment by the DHS; not to mention the loss of a friend (Darryl), the young protagonist, Marcus, decides to wage war against the DHS. He sets up a network through which he and others who wish to dissent can communicate, and he later perfects the encryption process to further protect the network's privacy. He then begins giving out arphids which jam the DHS technology (tracking chips and the like). This book is very childlike, in the sense that it is unrealistically optimistic. It reminds me of the movie V for Vendetta, where one man takes down an entire totalitarian regime. If this happened in real life, the DHS would have taken him out rather quickly. Overall, it's an interesting book but the plot is submerged in unrealistic waters.
I have completed a little over half the book, and I can't seem to pull away from the book. It was suprising on how the book started. An everyday teenager and his friend dithced to play a game, and right near where they must go for their game, there is a terrorist attack on the Bay Bridge. As if this wasn't bad enough, he and his friends get picked up by the Department of Homeland Security and are treated as terrorists. Eventually, Marcus and two of his friends are released. Marcus then realized that one of his friends was still being held by the DHS and aims at getting revenge and getting his friend back. He begins to hack an XBOX, in order to avoid being detected by the government. I am anxious to continue reading to find out how exactly he plans on out-smarting the DHS and getting his friend back.
This book was a very interesting and addicting book. In Marcus's attempt to get revenge and get his friend back from the DHS, he wages war on the DHS as well. He tries numerous ways in the attempt to sabotoge the DHS. In conclusion, he spills his story on how they were mistreated, which is later published. This led to his revenge being succeeded, where he had taken over the DHS. As Vadim had said, i believe this novel is unrealistic. Yet, I think the novel is also trying to send a message, which is that noone can ever take away our freedom as Americans, and that we should always fight for our freedom.
Although i would commend Marcus for his "stick it to the man attitude," there are some times where you just have to give up and allow yourself to be beaten by someone that is bigger than you. When Marcus was being interogated for the first time, he made it obvious that he would not tell them what they wanted to hear and they made him regret it. The second time he did that, they tortured him and probably would have killed him to make an example to anyone that stands in their way. It's great that he stands up for what he believes in, but sometimes its just not worth is.
I also agree with Heena D., but i'd like to talk first about my overall experience with the book so far then, some questions. First, I really enjoy the book so far and it's one of the best i've read in a long time. It's interesting to see high school students with the kind of power Marcus and his crew have. They've learned how to beat the school system but this also led them into the situation they're in. As they get closer to the clue they find themselves in a horrible situation. The town is getting bombed and people are going crazy. After, reading the part when they try to go into the subway for safety i realized, what if this happend in skokie and where would i go to hide? I think the safest place in skokie that I know would be a basement somewhere but what if everything caves in and you're stuck under with no telling for how long. Anyone have any other places they'd hide? Another question is, how would people feel if our school kept a strict system that monitored the way we walked? Perosonally, id feel like a prisoner of some sort. And lastly, if you could help save the world, what three things would you ask for in return? (realisticly) I'd ask to 1. live wealthy for the rest of my life and my family. 2. An endless supply of Fruit Roll Ups :]. and last any new technology that comes out. -Carlos R.
This is one of the few books that i like (so far). It relates to me because of Marcus and his friends being in high school and playing video games. The second Marcus ditched school and mentioned the bad neighborhood they were going to enter, I knew something bad was going to happen. I never thought terrorists would blow up the bridge or thought that high school students could be mistaken for terrorists, but since they have a background in "hacking" it would make sense. So far this book keeps me reading and wondering what is going to happen next.
little brother is a great book so far. its very interesting that some teens ditch school to play a game and end up going to "jail" for it, because they were in an area where a bombing took place. when they are let go a few days later they find that one of their friends didn't make it. using technology as their weapon against the DHS (defense of homeland security) the war begins between the miss treated and the DHS i can't wait to find out what happens.
I really enjoyed reading Little Brother. It is truly one of my new favorite books. After Marcus and his friends got out of jail their lives all changed. It was sad how Darryl was not released from jail, and the teens did not know what happened to him. After the terrorist attack, San Francisco was run by the Department of Homeland Security. They had cameras on every corner of streets and questioned everyone as if they were criminals. Marcus was getting very angry with not having any privacy, so he started the Xnet. It was an anonymous way for all people to go on the internet. During a party, Marcus also meets Ange, who would later become his girlfriend and love of his life. Later in the book, Marcus also could not keep his secret about going to jail to himself any longer. He told his mom and dad. They then introduced him to Barbra Stratford, who helped him publish his story in the paper. After his story got out, he was taken to jail again. But after one day, he was rescued and the Department of Homeland Security was taken out of San Francisco. I thought it was great how even though Marcus had to go through so much trouble, he managed to beat the DHS and the city began to change to its normal ways.
RAchel R.... I think that little brother was a really great book. It showed how a boy could out beat the DHS. He was very good for a while not being caught by them. This book also shows how much one person would care for his best friend trying to find him after the bridge being blown up. I am glad he found his friend and he knew that he was alive. I think that he should have been award for what he did. This book shows that the DHS can not always blame people at first like marcus...This book was a really good book and i would recommend this to anyone
Little Brother was a book thats infused with many different plots. It was amazing how a simple group of teenagers were able to out smart the police at their own game. Marcus hit many difficult spots within the book but he capable of getting out of these situations any way possible. This book showed that not everyone is a suspect of terrorism and that if you let it get to your head you will pick of the wrong people. In this book it may seem like the situations that these teens were in werent able to fix them. But in the end everything seems to work out even if it will take some time to get there.
The rest of this book was really interesting. Just as I thought it wasn’t going to get any better it did. Disgusted by the lack of freedom the country was providing him, Marcus went on to reestablish the Xnet. It was a way to privately use the internet with only the people you wanted to talk to. After the DHS started issuing Fast Passes to the citizens of San Francisco, to basically keep track of where they were at all times, Marcus felt that he had had enough. Through the Xnet Marcus educated people on “jamming”, which swapped the identification numbers of people that were around the mechanism, like a wifi. This created further chaos, and through this national chaos his identity became known as MiKeY. He became famous and went on to bring down the DHS. He unraveled the flaws of the DHS with the help of his fellow Xnetters. Soon he shared his story with a renowned journalist named Barbra Stratford. She published the story, and the DHS came after Marcus because it was promised that his kidnapping was to be a secret. Soon enough Barbara, knowing everything, came to his rescue. He then rescued his girlfriend Ange, and his best friend Darryl, who had been held hostage since eh had first arrived. Marcus had finally defeated the DHS! It was exciting to see a smart teenage tech kid bring down the DHS, and rescue his country!
after finishing the book i realized that a kid that was no older then brought down DHS. going through hardships of a normal teen on top of being survalenced by the government all the time. after finding that his friend is alive and he strives even harder to bring down the DHS. then his girlfriend is also taken enraged by this he does everything in his power to bring back his friends from the government. going back to jail again and this time being saved not from giving out info but for exposing the DHS and their true colors. saved by the state swat teams and the abolishment of the DHS from the state. marcus finds his friends in a dazed state due to the treatment that they got. in the end the teens won over the DHS. even though they were sent to court of what they did they prevailed in there goal.
