I really like this book. It opened my eyes to what really goes on in the working world. Most jobs do not pay that much and make a person work too hard for the little pay they receive. Barbara was very brave to try to survive from month to month on low-paying jobs. I would never do that; most jobs that pay little require the person to do too much, and I am way too lazy. It was interesting to see the everyday tasks a waitress has to go through. It also surprised me that a Wal-Mart orientation was 8 hours long, with a very small break. Another instance that surprised me was about the cleaning ladies. The book showed that they make a person's house appear to be clean, not actually free of dirt and bacteria.
i think barbara ehrenreich is a very strong woman. to go live a life, holding jobs that pay only minimum wage, is a diffucult task when youre an adult. having to leave your decent house into a trailer house with barely enough money to pay rent, is a courageous step that she's taken. barbara undergoes frustrating situations during her journey. she holds jobs that she doesnt enjoy doing, such as waitressing and housecleaning. also, it is also very hard to find a decent living location. she has to think about how far her home would be from work, since she doesnt have that kind of money to be paying for gas once a week. she needs to consider renting costs and appliance availble to her use as well.
This is a great book to pick up and read right now with how our econonmy is struggling. Barbara Ehrenrich, in my opinion, is a great woman who really has been through much, struggling on minimum wage jobs and bouncing from job to job. Working as a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, and other occupations, aren't easy jobs, and in fact can cause much stress, especially when you get paid poorly, like in her case. To have to pay rent, taxes, and all sorts of bills, its challenging. To even find and be able to stay in a safe place to live can also be tough. One event that stood out to me, was not only was Barbara a housecleaner, but her mother was previously one as well. Its interesting because you would think, the mom struggles to hold jobs, pay rent, and things like that, but you wouldn't think that it would pass down, like it sort of did to Barbara. Even with the struggles her mom went through, it still continued as Barbara grew up. That shows you how if we have setbacks like that with our economy it could go on for a while without getting better. Again, im still not finished reading this book, but I really enjoy it and recommend it to others!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very intersting to find out how many people struggle because of the minimm wage they recieve. I liked how she told the truth about the places she worked at. Such as the restaraunt, it showed that the manager was very rude and hardly did anything. I agree with Joseph S. because this book is really good to read about the struggling economy.
i did not enjoy reading this book. i thought the book was confusing at some points, having to consider all the jobs that she went to, some of them being her second job at once. i like how barbara tried showing people what it's like living with low wage pay. even though i understood the whole jist of the book, i thought it was hard to comprehend at some parts. i wouldn't really recommend this book to my friends.
At times this book was a bit difficult to understand, but for the most part i enjoyed it because it related so much to the economic crisis we have to struggle with today. She went through so many low wage jobs, its crazy. I think this is a hard read, but overall i do recommend it to others. This is definetely a good book to read with the type of position our country is in right now!
